Last night’s basketball game between the Wildcats of Fort Valley State University (FVSU) and Golden Tigers of Tuskegee University was a family affair for Wildcats Head Coach, John Douglas. In his first season at FVSU, the game would match him against his older brother, Leon, who is the head coach of the Golden Tigers. In their first meeting this season, it was the older brother who got the bragging rights with a 69-52 Golden Tiger win.
Leading by 10 points at halftime (37-27), the Golden Tiger expanded that lead to 24 points near the five minute mark in the second half. Ranked number two in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), the Golden Tigers dominated in almost every phase of last night’s game. In addition to 34 points scored inside the paint, Tuskegee scored 17 points off of Wildcat turnovers and got 45 of their 69 points from players coming off the bench. As a team, they shot 49% from the floor (29 of 59) and they collected more rebounds than FVSU, 44-30.
While Kenneth Simmons finished with 18 points (5 of 10 in three point attempts) and Randy Graham posted 13 points for FVSU, the collective effort by the Golden Tigers was simply better than that of the Wildcats last night.
The Wildcats are now 7-13 overall and 5-12 in conference play and return to action on Saturday afternoon in the HPE Arena when they host the Tigers of Stillman College. As part of an afternoon doubleheader, the Lady Wildcats will meet the Lady Tigers at 1 p.m. followed by the men at 3 p.m.
