Wildcats Get Revenge on Thorobreds While Breaking Three-Game Skid

By: FVSU Office of Sports Information

In last night’s game against the Thorobreds of Kentucky State University (KSU), the Wildcats of Fort Valley State University (FVSU) turned in a solid team performance which propelled them to a 81-71 win.  Played at KSU's Exum Center, the game was an opportunity for FVSU to avenge an earlier season loss to the Thorobreds and to snap a three-game losing streak. The Wildcats were successful on both accounts.

Although trailing 35-32 at halftime, FVSU put together a second half of basketball that was one of their best of the season.  Shooting a torrid 48% (14of 29) from the floor, the Wildcats got impressive performances from a cadre of players in the final 20 minutes.

With five FVSU players finishing the game in double figure scoring,  the Wildcats managed to turn the three point halftime deficit into a second half lead that grew to as large as 18 points in the game's remaining 7:53. In a contest that featured six lead changes, FVSU took control of the second half through a combination of perimeter shooting, unselfish passing, strong inside play, and effective transition from offense to defense.

From the perimeter, guard Jeremy Sledge set the pace for the Wildcats.  Three of his four field goals were three point baskets and he converted six of eight free throw opportunities.  Sledge finished with 17 points, two rebounds, two assists, and one steal.

Inside the paint, Detrius McCall was dominate for FVSU.  He finished the game with a "double-double." His 15 points and 13 rebounds were crucial because it gave the Wildcats a genuine inside threat to complement the team's shooting from the outside.  He also added two assists, two blocks, and two steals to his totals.

Likewise, forward Steven Gill posed considerable problems for the Thorobreds inside.  Gill was five of 11 from the floor.  His quick jump and shot release ability was an enigma for the Thorobreds.  On the night Gill had 13 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Forwards Darrell Aiken and Randy Graham were significant factors for FVSU as well.  Both finished with 10 points and five rebounds.  Graham's performance was highlighted by his unselfish play on passes in critical situations leading to Wildcat baskets.  He had three assists that came at absolutely essential moments during the second half.

The win elevates the Wildcat season record to 6-8 overall and puts their conference mark at 4-7.  FVSU is back in action on Thursday, January 21st at 7:30 p.m. (CST) when they meet the Dragons of Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee.
