Columbus, GA-Miles 3, Fort Valley 2-In what may have been the longest game in SIAC Softball Tournament history, the Miles College Lady Bears outlasted the Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State 3-2 in a 13 inning classic. With the win, Miles advances to the SIAC Championship Game bracket while Fort Valley drops down to the loser’s bracket in the double-elimination tournament.
Fort Valley State scored first in the bottom of the third inning when Courtney Purser hit a two run single. Miles College got on the board in the top of the fourth when Morgan Bertram scored on a throwing error to make the score 2-1 FVSU. LaSheka Williams later scored on a sacrifice fly by Valerie Pena to tie the score at 2-2. Both teams then settled down in a pitcher’s duel that saw eight scoreless innings before Miles scored the winning run in the top of the 13th.
Ronkeya Garner pitched all 13 innings for FVSU, giving up two earned runs and striking out four. Heather Goolsby pitched 9.1 innings before being relieved by Kayla Bowmaster, who finished up to get the win. Fort Valley’s record now stands at 26-22 while Miles improved to 24-19-1. The Lady Wildcats will face the Lady Rams of Albany State at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday (April 25).
