Fort Valley 9, Kentucky State 2-The Fort Valley State University Lady Wildcats, the #2 seed out of the SIAC’s East Region, defeated the SIAC West’s top team (Kentucky State) in a game matching up two teams with a long history of close games in tournament play. Fort Valley State scored first in the second inning when Tameira Brown hit a two run single to make the score 2-0 FVSU. The Lady Wildcats then added on to their lead with another run in the top of the third inning. Kentucky State got right back in the contest in the bottom of the third when Brittnie Ragle singled in Colby Smith. Lamara Parker followed that up with a single-RBI to pull the Thorobrettes to within a run (3-2).
Fort Valley pulled away in the top of the fourth inning by scoring five runs off two hits. The big play in Fort Valley’s rally came when Courtney Purser reached first on an error by the KSU pitcher allowing two runs to score. Fort Valley added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to lock up the win. Ronkeya Garner did the work in the circle for FVSU, allowing two runs on nine hits. Purser, who went 2-for-4, was one of three Lady Wildcats who finished the afternoon with three RBI’s.
With the win, the Lady Wildcats improved to 26-21 on the season while Kentucky State fell to the loser’s bracket with a record of 20-16.
