Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia provides screening of FVSU Student-Athletes

On Monday, November 16th, the mobile testing unit of the Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia (SCFG) rolled up to the parking lot of the Fort Valley State University (FVSU) Health & Physical Education Complex to provide Sickle Cell screening for FVSU student-athletes.
SCFG was founded in 1971 and is dedicated to providing education, screening and counseling programs for Sickle Cell and other abnormal hemoglobins. The testing team travels year-round throughout the state providing these services to individuals through public school systems, businesses and health fairs. Currently, over 72,000 Americans have the Sickle Cell disease and of that number, 5,000 reside in Georgia.
FVSU Athletic Trainer Crystal Small and SCFG Testing Team member Diane Walker coordinated the testing of FVSU student-athletes. Walker, an FVSU alumnus and project assistant, along with outreach coordinator Harold Dobbs and genetic counselor Phillip Oliver conducted the on-site testing. Approximately 125 FVSU student-athletes were screened on Monday.
